Universal Detector Calibrant

TECHNOLOGY OPPORTUNITY

Florida International University (FIU) is pursuing commercial partners interested in developing and commercializing the Universal Detector Calibrant for biological detectors which is a novel and important tool to verify the reliability of biological detectors.  Biological detectors are primarily canines and they can detect compounds including explosive, accelerants, narcotics, arson, human scent, or cadaver. Concern over the validity of the biological detectors has steadily increased requiring the need for an easy, sensitive, and selectable method that can be used as a universal tool to calibrate the biological detectors as it exist for calibration of analytical laboratory instruments.

Currently, there is no practice that ensures that the biological detectors are working reliably, and are following suitable standards.  FIU researchers developed a tool that can serve not only for verifying if the biological detector is working reliably but it can also be used to compare and select future biological detectors to determining the time it takes to train the canine to alert to the compound and the sensitivity of detection.

This new technology can also be used as a quality control for the training of the biological detectors. The trainer would have a way to determine the detector continued ability and sensitivity, as well as if any reinforced training is needed, and determine if a candidate biological detector has aptitude of detection for a different odor.

APPLICATIONS

The Universal Detector Calibrant can be used in forensic investigation, missing person investigation, mass disaster investigation, security at port of entries, and in training of biological sensors.
