Treatment Method for Cancer

Florida International University (FIU) is pursuing commercial partners interested in commercializing a method of treating cancer. This method can be used in combination with existing anticancer drugs creating a new avenue in treating cancer patients. The invention combines a natural, nontoxic chemical with known anticancer drugs. The combination treatment would enable the use of reduced doses of expensive anticancer drugs, hence reducing the cost of the treatments. In addition, this invention can increase the efficacy of the existing anticancer drugs and minimizes the harsh damaging side effects for the patients.

This combination treatment has been tested in several cell lines in vitro and shown to have anti-cancer activity against a number of cancer cell lines, including breast, prostate and ovarian cancer cells. Additional testing has been done in vivo in a lung cancer model. The results to date indicate that there is a higher apoptotic potential when cells were treated with the combination of the anticancer drug and the non-toxic compounds than when treated with the individual agents.

Enhancement of the therapeutic effects of anticancer treatment with potential for reduction of undesirable side effects.

  • Enhanced efficacy of the existing anticancer drug.
  • Lower cost of existing anti-cancer treatment.
  • Reduce or eliminate severe side effects of existing anticancer drugs.
  • Potential to generate additional pharmaceutical compositions and formulations.
  • Requires the use of inexpensive, nontoxic compound know to have multitude of health benefits.
