FIU continues building research infrastructure to support the goals of research breakthroughs and discoveries. Research at FIU focuses on addressing scientific challenges, as well as the social and economic needs of Florida and the nation. The Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) provides leadership in research administration, supports the endeavors of the University’s research community, and ensures the responsible stewardship of research activities. ORED accomplishes its mission by minimizing the impediments to research activity, promoting research conduct that meets the highest standards of ethical integrity, and ensuring that research activity is compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations.

Research awards totaled $259.4M during fiscal year 2022-2023. Additionally, research expenditures grew to $316.5M during fiscal year 2022-2023.  FIU also retained the top tier Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education category for doctoral research universities – R1: Doctoral University – Highest Research Activity.
